The Centre is an organization in the Metropolis. It is well-known for its advanced technology and heavy focus on scientific research and development.

Background[edit | edit source]

The Centre was born from the Weill Cornell University, or WCU, a renowned research university located on the Upper East Side in New York City, New York. During the Third World War, a number of WCU personnel survived by taking refuge in the bunker built beneath the underground level of the campus. In 2143, their descendants decided to press on with their researches, with a focus on ultimately restoring the ravaged nation, and formed what they called simply "the Centre". This name, they tell those who ask, reflects "our intent to be a nexus, a centre, of science and technology, with a singular goal in our minds - the restoration of America."

The Centre focuses on the continuing push of science and technology, with the intent of ultimately beginning the restoration of the ravaged Wasteland.

Structure[edit | edit source]

At the highest level, the Centre is overseen by the Central Council, which consists of the Director and the heads of all ten departments. They are responsible for determining policy and the general direction of all Centre activity.

Directly underneath the Council, Centre operations split into two primary agencies - Administrations Branch and Research Branch. The former oversees all of the regular day-to-day business of the organization, as well as all matters involving external

Administrations Branch[edit | edit source]

Administrations Branch consists of four separate departments - External Operations, Facilities, Internal Operations, and Technical Services.

  • External Operations is the arm of the Centre responsible for both managing its contact with other groups and the execution of all defensive and offensive actions.
  • Facilities is responsible for all upkeep on the Complex and its superstructure. It handles life support, power production and distribution, food and housing, mechanical engineering and maintenance.
  • Internal Operations handles all internal security and safety systems.
  • Technical Services manages the communications and computer systems of the Complex, ensuring the efficient management and uninterrupted flow of information and messages between personnel and departments.

Research Branch[edit | edit source]

Research Branch consists of six separate departments - Biosciences, Engineering, Medsciences, Special Projects, Urban Development, and Weapons Development.

  • Biosciences is responsible for all research into animal husbandry, agriculture, botany, environmental restoration and conservation, and other related subjects.
  • Engineering focuses on research into research of machinery, materials, components, tools, and all other related matters.
  • Medsciences focuses its efforts in all fields related to medicine, surgery, and healthcare.
  • Special Projects handles a wide array of highly sensitive scientific initiatives, drawing on personnel and support from the other departments.
  • Urban Development studies urban planning, construction, architecture, and other related topics.
  • Weapons Development oversees the successful production of weaponry, ordnance, ammunition, defensive systems, and combat gear.

Headquarters[edit | edit source]

The Centre is based out of the what was formerly the Weill Cornell University, and is now referred to simply as "the Complex". While the city was spared any direct nuclear strikes thanks to the regional laser defense grid, damage from a half century of neglect as well as early scavengers took a heavy toll. The slow process of reversing the damage and restoring the facility would begin in earnest on New Year's Day, 2144.

Using materials available and the equipment held in the underground level, the new organization began to gradually repair its home. They focused on reinforcing the structure, adding shielding to protect against radiation, and remodeling the interior of the complex to accommodate a new layout including extensive research laboratories, workrooms, machine shops, and accommodations for personnel and their families.

The underground level, including the bunker, were likewise renovated to accommodate a manufacturing plant and fabrication shops, enabling the organization to produce whatever it required with raw materials. The underground also contains a hydroponic area for growing a wide range of flora for food and medicine, and a full scale water reclamation system, which recycles, purifies, and reuses every drop. There is likewise a biomass reclamation system, which harnesses bodily waste for fertilizers.

By 2243, the Centre had added extensive additional shielding to the interior and exterior of the complex, as well as thick, heavily reinforced windows made with transparent lead to proof the facility further against radiation. A new, more advanced and more extensively equipped emergency bunker has since been constructed beneath the older, original bunker.

Real World[edit | edit source]

The Centre is based out of what would, in the real world, be the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan Island.
