Amity Insurance is a firm headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee that provides health, life and disability insurance in Tennessee. As of 2025, the firm provides its services to more than ten million people. It is also one of the only insurance providers in the United States to hold a B-Corporation certification.

History[edit | edit source]

Amity was founded in April 2021, by a group of entrepreneurs who had previously worked together at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Collectively, they had over 200 years of combined experience in mail services, literature fulfillment, customer service, and claims. They decided, after the infamous 2020 "Insurance Crash" that a new company needed to be built that provided its services to their members and providers with a focus on "compassionate support and efficient service". To that end, they were able to secure an initial $100 million loan from Berkshire Hathaway, with a check signed personally by Warren Buffet, and set about preparing their new business, buying out the BlueCross BlueShield Tennessee branch.

Selecting a "simple name invoking a sense of dignified presence and trustworthiness," the group decided to call the new firm Amity. They were formally established on Monday, 5 April 2021. The firm spent its first year organizing, adjusting its standards and protocols, and setting its personnel structure and pay scale. The firm opted for a straightforward, no-frills hierarchy, and a corporate setting that was "clean, relaxed, and simple but firmly rooted in professionalism and positive interaction."

With the advent of 2025, the company employs more than 5,000 people and provides insurance to just over 15 million Americans. Its liquid assets for FY2024 were reported to be in excess of $100 billion.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Amity embraces a model that promotes “equal opportunity, equal respect, equal rights”. The firm will accept any qualified candidate, no matter their race, creed, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, height, weight, physical or mental ability, military obligations, and marital status. All employees are treated with equal respect and the firm strives to maintain open opportunities for any and all workers to advance and find new positions, challenges, and responsibilities. The firm shows some preference to the hiring of military veterans.

Amity operates on a for-profit model, but it combines its profits with a program it refers to as “Helping Hands”, wherein the firm donates underwritten profits to a variety of charities - the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Salvation Army, the Wounded Warrior Project, and Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.

Additionally, the firm maintains a program known as “In-House Investment”, or "IHI", where every non-executive employee of the company receives a bonus check at the end of every fiscal year that is measured according to the previous fiscal year’s performance. These checks average between $1,000 and $1,500. Those employees at or above the rank of director only receive a bonus check if the company exceeds its previous year's performance numbers.
