Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Setting[edit | edit source]

The game take place in 2143 AD, one hundred years after the Earth was devastated by a short nuclear war and the release of a dangerous viral agent, both of which have ravaged the population and shattered pre-War global society. Each game in the franchise is centered around a different part of post-war America, and the events of the story gradually lead the player towards the inevitable end game. Project 81" TBD is set in the Great Lakes region, and the player journeys between Grand Rapids and Detroit. Project 81: TBD is set in New York City, with the player becoming embroiled in ongoing conflicts between the factions controlling the boroughs of the ruined metropolis. Project 81: TBD is set in Northeast Tennessee, with the player finally following the trail to where PATHWAYS originated, and ultimately to Oak Ridge itself, where they must navigate the intricacies of factional interactions within the sprawling pre-war government research facility.

Characters[edit | edit source]

Players control an individual known as "the Wayfarer", who comes from a small community built among the ruins of Rockford, north of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their journey begins when they are sent as part of a caravan to the village of Comstock, in the outskirts of Grand Rapids, to deliver food and other supplies promised in exchange for medicine and clean water. Along the way, the caravan is ambushed by unknown assailants wielding military-grade weapons and equipped with high-end hardware. The Wayfarer, knocked unconscious by the blast from a stun grenade, wake up in an underground bunker being examined by scientists. It is during this time they first hear the name "TBD".

Plot[edit | edit source]

On May Day of 2043 AD (1 May), a deadly viral agent known as PATHWAYS was accidentally released from the Arcpoint Laboratories in Clinton, Tennessee. In a few short weeks, it spread quickly throughout the southeastern United States and lead to tens of thousands of deaths, billions in property damage, and chaos in the streets. Combined efforts by the CDC and national guard forces from a dozen states failed to contain the spread, which gradually made its way throughout the continental USA and Canada and eventually into Asia and Europe despite travel restrictions and a complete halt to all international flights. Against this backdrop was the looming specter of war between NATO and Russia over the latter's interference in Eastern Europe, a confrontation between Chinese and Russian forces in southern Siberia after a shootout between troops on the border, and rapidly rising tensions in the Middle East due to a brief war between Saudia Arabia and Iran which sent oil prices skyrocketing and global markets spiraling. Economic instability, shortages of fuel and other vital goods, anti-war protests, the continued spread of the PATHWAYS virus, and fears of potential world war had the entire world on a knife's edge.

Things came to a head on 28 June 2043 when China launched an invasion of Mongolia and the southern Siberian regions of Russia after weeks of fruitless diplomatic talks failed to cool the confrontation between the two nations. In retribution, Russia launched tactical nuclear weapons against Chinese forces. The PRC retaliated with nuclear strikes of its own, which led to a large-scale Russian response that also saw nuclear strikes in Ukraine. This, in turn, led to nuclear launches by the USA, France, and the UK against Russia. In less than one day, tens of millions were dead with radiation and fallout began to spread worldwide. Millions more on every continent would fall victim to this radioactivity, and within the next five years at least two-thirds of the world population was dead, dying, or severely ill due to radiation poisoning. Global society gradually collapsed.

Those pockets of humanity that survived did so primarily thanks to their isolated locations in distant corners. Signs of a hardscrabble life gradually began to show as those who remained began to try and re-establish civilization. Survivalist groups slowly made contact with each other and as trade began to expand and a new barter economy began to emerge. This post-apocalyptic society slowly continues to grow despite the countless hazards and dangerous creatures that now call the wastes home and is the setting into which you, the player character, emerge.
