The Realm operates on the Allidia Calendar, named for the cleric who devised it more than two thousand years ago. It consists of fourteen months of 26 days each, for a year of 364 days. Every five years, the year has an additional day known as the Correction. This day comes at the end of the fourteenth month and is a day of religious and community celebration, known as the Remembrance Festival.

Cuisine[edit | edit source]

Several common foods in the realms include fresh fruits, steamed or boiled vegetables, jellied eels, whale meat, brined hagfish, grilled whale, blood sausage, pickled quail eggs, and light and dark bread.

Healing and medicine[edit | edit source]

Every village, town, and city has at least one resident vitalist who provides general physic to the people. This comes through a combination of elixirs, poultices, and restorative magic.

Care houses are larger establishments with several vitalists and nurses who provide prolonged care. Here, a patient is checked regularly and provided medicine, treatment, and therapy as needed.

Almshouses are places established to provide care for the less fortunate and elderly who have no family. These are operated by the Order of Illumination.

Pesthouses are established for the purpose of isolating the extremely sick. Commonly, people sent here are suffering from serious, contagious ailments for which there are no cures. The workers here provide relief and comfort to the sick.

Religions[edit | edit source]

Divine Flame[edit | edit source]

The religion of the Emidian people, its worship focuses on the deity Yion, recognised as the god of the sun, light, and fire. His power, represented by the Divine Flame, sustains all things and keeps the demons and dangers of darkness at bay.

HOLD[edit | edit source]

In the earliest days of time, The One brought together the discordant forces of the Creation wrought by Their will to shape the myriad worlds and the great lights of the Endless Beyond. Nurturing the growth of life on these worlds, and Livaria in particular, They appointed five of their servants to steward the world in accordance with the Divine Strictures, those absolute laws which govern all things.

These champions, elevated to demi-godhood, are known as "the Lumini" or "the Five". Second only to The One, they are the ultimate authority of the realm, guiding it in accordance with their master's will. They are:

  • Iton Ealdir, god of knowledge and progress; progenitor of scholarship and learning, champion of the expansion of knowledge and skill, advocate of education, master of divinations, keeper of the magicks, and herald of mysteries.
  • TBD, goddess of language and commerce; preserver of the spoken and written word, mistress of trade and custom, patroness of shopkeepers and merchants, protector of fair business, bringer of wealth and prosperity, advocate of work and craft, inspirer of great projects and industry, patroness of travel.
  • Yion, god of law and governance; promoter of justice, guardian of equity, exemplar of order, keeper of time, quintessence of leadership, paragon of authority, patron of just government, arbiter of the fates, Father of the Dragons.
  • Thaemis, god of valour and protections; the soldier's god, symbol of hierarchy, patron of service, pattern of righteous discipline, exemplar of duty, lord of battle, the tactical source, protector of the weak and infirm, defender of peace.
  • TBD, goddess of hearth and deliverance; protector of family and children, haven of the elderly, patroness of the safe home, blessed lady of hospitality, mistress of medicine, receiver of prayers for the future.

The Five are worshipped through an organisation known as the Order of Illumination. Faithful of the religion are known as the Illuminated. Its clerics promote the tenets of community and civic mindedness, personal discipline, treating others with compassion, and living an honest life and pursuing honest work.

The clerics of the Order are known as luminaries. Each district of the Realm is overseen by an Archluminary, and the Order as a whole is led by the High Luminary. Four times a year, senior clergy gather with the High Luminary for a session of the Conclave, which provides counsel and information to the Order's leader and helps discuss and arrange policy and decide on upcoming work.

The clergy of the Order are educated at a religious institute known as the Luminarium. Those children whose stars are read to be on the Path of the Sigil are brought here to receive a basic education as well as the training and instruction necessary to become working clerics within the Order. The Luminarium is led by a senior luminary known as the Chief Permissor.
