Aviria
The Isles of Aviria is a high fantasy worldbuilding project being undertaken by Tom Brown.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Isles are currently within a time period equivalent to the Late Middle Ages. Their key shaping forces are religion and magic. It consists of a very large main island with a total area of 2,833,916 square kilometers (1,094,181 square miles), of which 2,774,669 square kilometers (1,071,305 square miles) are land and 59,247 square kilometers (22,875 square miles) are water; and numerous smaller islands around it which have a total of 105,806 square kilometers (40,852 miles). The Isles approximately 5,402 kilometers (3,357 miles) from Waicroth, which is the nearest continent.
Geography and ecology[edit | edit source]
The Isles have a predominately temperate climate. The realm is surrounded on all four sides by oceans and has several mountain ranges: an extensive range that runs east-west in the northernmost region, a range running north-south in the southwest, and a range running north-south in the eastern central region. Two common meteorological troubles the Isles experiences are ice storms which occur throughout the year in the north and seasonal hurricanes from midsummer to late autumn in the far south. Approximately 58% of the main island is considered wilderness and wild animals are relatively common. Among the realm's abundant natural resources are coal, copper, silver, gold, marble, and timber (including oak, spruce, birch, acacia, black oak, and cherry).
Population[edit | edit source]
As of present date, the population of the Isles is estimated to be 14 million, 21% of which lives in urban areas and 79% in rural areas. Roughly four-fifths lives in the central and southern regions. Approximately two-thirds of the realm's population is literate. The gender ratio is 0.81 males to one female, the fertility rate is 2.4 children per family, and life expectancy is 72.6 years.
Politics[edit | edit source]
The vast majority of the realm is governed by a hereditary autocratic monarchy. The government's strongest influence is religion. Popular issues include trade. In terms of quality ratings, the realm's stability is good, personal freedoms are good, and scandals are few. Foreign relations are somewhat limited due to the distances involved with other nations.
Military[edit | edit source]
The realm's military is considered strong, with a focus on land forces with a small but fast navy. Its primary units include light infantry, heavy infantry, and archers. All soldiers are volunteers, though in times of national emergency levies can be called. The primary use of the military is for peacekeeping and border security, with troops on foot and horseback seen regularly patrolling the main roads. Rank is earned through merit and experience.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Professions[edit | edit source]
The following are common professions within the Isles: apothecary, butcher, cartographer, cleric, clerk, clothier, draper, farmer, fisherman, fletcher, greengrocer, haberdasher, leatherworker, librarian, lumberjack, metalsmith, miner, shepherd, solicitor, stonemason, surveyor, and toolsmith.

The following are some of the common foods enjoyed in the Isles: apples, beetroots, bread, cabbage, candy (sugar-mint), carrots, cookies, dried kelp, fish (cod), grapes, honey, lettuce, milk, meat (beef, chicken, mutton, pork, rabbit), melons, mushrooms, oranges, pies (apple, beef, mutton, pork, pumpkin), potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, stews (beetroot, mushroom, rabbit), sweet berries, teas, and tomatoes.

The following components used in alchemy and other work are found in the Isles: amethyst shards, blaze powders, blaze rods, diamonds, echo shards, emeralds, ender pearls, lapis lazuli, magma cream, nautilus shells, nether quartz, nether stars, nether wort, phantom membranes, prismarine crystals, prismarine shards, redstone dust, shambler shells, and witchfire oil.
The following dyes are used in the Isles: black, blue, brown, cyan, grey, green, light blue, light gray, lime green, magenta, orange, pink, purple, red, white, and yellow.
Magic[edit | edit source]
Magic is an indelible part of the history of the Isles and their culture but is uncommon in terms of its occurrence among the people. Arcane ability is an inherent ability for which there is no accurate predictor; two magically gifted parents may have a mundane child while two mundane parents may have a magically gifted child. As with all other things which sustain the world, magical power flows from the Creator, and only They know how mages are chosen. The main uses of magic in Aviria are for healing, protection, and (when needed) combat. Among the public, magic users are respected. Magical items, while they do exist, are uncommon.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Religion[edit | edit source]
The vast majority of the citizens of the Isles worship the Circle Celestianl, also known as the Ten Gods or the Lumini. Since the earliest days of the Imperium the faith has been a foundational aspect of society. The pantheon consists of TBD the god of law, governance, and judgment; TBD the goddess of community, hospitality, family, and hearth; TBD the goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the weather; TBD the god of magic, time, and death; TBD the goddess of commerce, work, and good fortune; TBD the god of knowledge, progress, and safe travel; TBD the goddess of love, beauty, and creativity; TBD the goddess of healing, mercy, and charity; TBD the god of war, vigilance, and service; and TBD the god of change, mischief, and grief.
In the capital city of Highspire, there are individual temples dedicated to each of the gods, while those temples found in other cities, towns, and villages have shrines which include all of the gods.
